Toronto Star is one of Canada's most widely read news brands, with a flagship site and an expansive network of local properties serving audiences across the country. Its portfolio spans a range of trusted regional titles alongside the main Toronto Star brand, reaching a large and loyal readership daily. With deep advertiser relationships and a strong track record of closing direct deals, the publisher operates at real commercial scale, backed by high-quality editorial environments.

This strong foundation is supported by an exclusive, three-year strategic partnership with Primis, built on driving shared growth and innovation.

The Challenge

Publishers like Toronto Star face the ongoing responsibility of fully executing direct campaign commitments they make to brand partners. When a deal is sold, the expectation is full delivery against agreed KPIs.Ensuring complete delivery is vital not only for maximizing revenue, but also for maintaining the strong, long-term relationships publishers share with their advertisers.

Toronto Star was already attracting strong audiences and healthy advertiser demand. The challenge was not finding advertisers. It was having enough available inventory to deliver the campaigns that had already been sold.

With the mobile Float format inactive , the publisher was facing a bottleneck that limited its ability to activate existing demand:

  • Direct campaigns that had been sold were going underdelivered

  • Available viewable time was not being fully utilized

  • Existing inventory was not being fully monetized

At the same time, maintaining a high-quality reading experience was non-negotiable. Any solution had to expand delivery capacity without compromising the editorial environment that made Toronto Star worth advertising in the first place.

Primis helped us unlock significantly more value from inventory we already had. Instead of struggling to fulfill direct campaign commitments, we were able to increase delivery, improve monetization, improve video performance for client KPI’s, and continue providing the premium experience our advertisers and readers expect."

The Solution

Primis' starting point was not a product. It was a question: what does this publisher actually need to succeed?

That question sits at the heart of how Primis works. As a publisher partner rather than a technology provider, our role is to understand the business behind the inventory and build around what actually matters to the people running it.

For Toronto Star, the answer was clear. They needed a way to deliver on existing direct deals more efficiently, make better use of their available inventory, and do it in a way that preserved the reader experience their audience expected.

Working closely with the Toronto Star team, Primis introduced a native Float format on mobile, opening up additional inventory capacity and significantly improving the publisher's ability  to fulfill advertiser demand.

This was not about introducing a new format for its own sake. It was about creating additional capacity from existing traffic and helping the publisher make better use of the inventory it already had.

Implementation was rolled out across Toronto Star's network of local domains, ensuring the rollout could scale without disrupting the core editorial experience. As inventory expanded, Toronto Star improved delivery against direct campaigns while creating additional monetization opportunities across its network. Primis also provided the flexibility to run the publisher's own demand alongside marketplace campaigns, reflecting the collaborative, needs-first approach that defines how we work with publishing partners. The result was a more scalable revenue model that generated greater value from existing traffic without compromising the reader experience.

Business Impact:

The results reflect what happens when a solution is built around a publisher's actual business needs rather than applied generically. Toronto Star was able to fulfill direct campaign commitments, improve utilization of its available inventory, and grow revenue without sacrificing the user experience its readers expect.

The partnership continues to evolve, with strong trust and ongoing momentum across the local news network. Three years of exclusive collaboration have built a foundation that keeps delivering, because the measure of success has always been Toronto Star's outcomes, not just our own.
